go mariam! i emailed her once and she was so helpful in pointing me in the right direction, and introducing me to people in the art world. i got told about a few things too like naked city guide www.nakedcityguide.com.au. anyone coming to the gold coast must check this website out (and not those boring, touristy gold coast sites!)

Thanks so much everyone for all of the comments. It's been great to hear from so many people considering the timeliness of the issue of images, age and perception in media and advertising. Thanks to Mel and Amelia - big fans of both of your work.
One of the reasons why I approached Amelia to become a part of this blog series is that I think she is a technically creative photographer and creates wonderful imagery. I hope everyone takes a look at the second blog in the series with Rachel Burke and the keeps an eye out for the upcoming blogs from young females in the Brisbane fashion scene.

I really like Amelia's work, everytime something new gets posted I look forward to the unique way she has explored the environment, light and tone. As far as sexualising women, I don't think she's guilty of that. Exploring beauty in fashion is not sexualisation. That APA report raises really good points, however I DON'T think that Amelia's body of work (or the R+J images for that matter) promote the idea that:
- a person’s value comes only from his or her sexual appeal or behavior, to the exclusion of other characteristics;
- a person is held to a standard that equates physical attractiveness (narrowly defined) with being sexy;
- a person is sexually objectified—that is, made into a thing for others’ sexual use, rather than seen as a person with the capacity for independent action and decision making; and/or
- sexuality is inappropriately imposed upon a person

She just takes nice pictures.

Hi Anne,

I understand that for you, these images might hit a nerve.

However, I read the APA article that you linked to and the full report (http://www.apa.org/pi/women/programs/girls/report-full.pdf) and I think the research is more about direct sexualization of women and girls.

The examples they provide of sexualization include (from the full report: page 1 - 2)

"Imagine a 5-year-old girl walking through a mall
wearing a short T-shirt that says “Flirt.”

Consider the instructions given in magazines to
pre-adolescent girls on how to look sexy and get a
boyfriend by losing 10 pounds and straightening
their hair.

Envision a soccer team of adolescent girls whose sex
appeal is emphasized by their coach or a local journalist
to attract fans.

Think of print advertisements that portray women as
little girls, with pigtails and ruffles, in adult sexual poses."

I applaud you for looking at some related research but I think if you look at a few photos from Amelia's flickr site, you will find some great photography and strong, independent, beautiful women rather than sexualization as defined in APA research,

Take this great one for example! http://www.flickr.com/photos/ameliadowd/6687393009/in/photostream - She looks rather piratey!

Anne,
An advert for Romeo and Juliet is not the same as an advert for sheets. I’m going to assume you are intelligent enough to work out the difference in connotation and how the image would be read.
If you cared to investigate further into this issue you would find out why the image was chosen and that no thought was ever given to age as the female actor in this shot is 27 in a month. The main issue from my understanding was that it wasn’t clearly stated on the image that it was for Romeo and Juliet.
Further more if you look at Amelia’s photography work you’ll find that it shows women is a beautiful and I from why I have seen, empowered way.
I definitely agree that there are huge problems with the sexualisation for young girls in the media; I would just make sure you have the full story on an issue before making a sarcastic comment.

Oh come on Anne, really?
You think these photos in particular are over sexualised or are you just making a comment in general?

Amelia's photos are beautiful and as a female I find absolutely nothing disturbing, inappropriate or overly sexual used about them. I think it's shameful that you feel the need to use this to push your own agenda instead of supporting a very talented local artist who has done absolutely nothing but create beautiful images
