Korczak Festival, 23-31 May 2014

Do you have international-tour ready show?

The World ASSITEJ Congress is the most important meeting of all members of the ASSITEJ Association of Theatres for Children and Young People which takes place once in three years.

ASSITEJ is a french acronym for the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People.

This is the climax of ASSITEJ work throughout the three years; a reflection on implemented actions and vision for the future. The last ASSITEJ World Congress in Copenhagen/Malmoe brought together 1600 theatre practitioners and festival programmers from all over the world. The motto of the congress is: FACING THE AUDIENCE. We understand this as a presentation of theatre for young audiences that understands, follows and responds to the transformation of its spectators. We would like to put three main issues under your consideration:

Theatre for teenagers, theatre for the very young and inclusive theatre & disability art. And we would like to prove to you that:

WARSAW has no limits
ART has no limits
THEATRE has no limits
the AUDIENCE has no limits
COOPERATION has no limits

I was lucky enough to be chosen to be on the Steering Committee for the wonderful Watershed youth performance conference, held 11 to 13 April in Canberra 2013.

Watershed was the second National Theatre Summit for Young and Emerging Artists following Totipotent, which took place at St. Martins Youth Arts Centre, Melbourne in September of 2011. The purpose of the Summit is to inspire the Australian Theatre industry and for outcomes from this summit for young people are then raised at the Australian Theatre Forum to ensure the needs of young people are being represented.

Watershed was a three day event with master classes, a panel discussion, workshops and performances. It was an interesting and enjoyable conference and I particularly enjoyed being a part of the Steering Committee.

The Steering Committee had very many poignant discussions, which can be summarized by:

1) Us making recommendations for future young and emerging performance conferences – including more involvement from a steering committee in the definition and structure of the conference, defining and upholding emerging professional theatre makers as the target group, and liked the idea of being housed by an independent theatre in the future.

2) We thought about recommendations we’d like to take to Australian Theatre Forum 2013 including:
- more scaffolding for mid-career artists
- better conversations between Australia Theatre Forums, senior companies and artists, and emerging forums and artists – more of a two way dialogue

3) Asking youth theatres to be accountable to young artists by all having a board or recommendation committee of young people, not just from theatre but from all areas like Contact (UK) does to approve and influence productions/ company decisions.

4) That all or most major theatre companies house productions for young audiences, as well as productions by independent artists

We also had great discussions about the legacy we would like to create as we move up in the arts world; which included always being open to new artists and projects (i.e. not just giving gigs to our friends).

There was an amazing keynote from Baba Israel, ex-artistic director of Contact (UK) and hip-hop theatre extraordinaire. Baba described that, like Australian Theatre for Young People, Contact was making great grounds crossing from theatre into film, combining the two, drawing them together in amazing ways.

Canberra turned out to be a really great city to be housed in with lots of gallery trips and live music everywhere! As you may have heard, this year is celebrating its Centenary year and the city is hosting a whole year of creative activities.

A highlight was Canberra Youth Theatre’s 35°17 SOUTH, which was an incredible conjunction of gaming, live performance and promenade theatre. Leading me to my favourite part of the conference; an incredible karaoke night we spent together at the close of the conference. I made new connections and great memories.

She is on the board of Backbone Youth Arts and you can see her perform at The Nightingale and The Rose at the Brisbane Powerhouse this week!

This blog post has been contributed by Rebecca Edwards Cairns Creative Crawl Coordinator working with the Creative Partnerships | Cairns Regional Council team.

What the Cairns Creative Crawl?

Cairns is home of some vibrant creative venues full of artistic talent and unique product. The Cairns Creative Crawl is an innovative celebration of the venues, bringing a social crowd to interact with visual arts, music and performance elements within venue spaces. Audiences visit up to seven venues in one night, spending 30 minutes at each venue.

Some crawlers have said ‘it’s like a mystery tour’ (although a program is released) as many of the attendees have not visited the venues before.

The bus ride and venue hopping is a great opportunity to meet other creative people, to have a chat with artists, to have a drink and some fun.

History:

The first ever Cairns Creative Crawl was held in December 2010 a self-guided walking tour. In December 2011, the Crawl was reinvigorated as a guided “arty” bus tour, and it has been able to include venues outside the Cairns CBD. Since then, Five bus Crawls have taken place; with the support of venues, performing and visual artists, musicians and attendees. Today, the Cairns Creative Crawl is a popular open-top-double-decker bus tour.

Highlights of the May 2013 Crawl:

The most recent Cairns Creative Crawl was held on the evening of Fri 3 May 2013. 110 crawlers were transported in style to enjoy multi arts; music; visual arts; creative shopping; food and drinks at leading Cairns creative venues.

That evening, the ‘Crawlers’ met at Centre of Contemporary Arts and enjoyed a cool bevvy from number 96 bar and visited the KickArts Contemporary Arts gallery spaces and shop. The darling of the Cairns local music scene, Louarde performed as part of A-Venue Cairns‘ Showcase at Events program and Centre of Contemporary Arts resident dance company Phluxus2 Dance Collective wowed crawlers with a short performance.

At 6pm we pulled up in front of UMI Arts in Sheridan St; it’s a retail shop and gallery space owned by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts community of FNQ. It has an expansive range of arts and craft items, all exclusively made by Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander artists with a connection to FNQ. Crawlers met Indigenous artist, George Riley within his solo exhibition Jillibalu (meaning ‘mopoke owl’ in Djabugandji language) an exhibition of paintings inspired by dreams, birds and nature. He explained his inspiration of his paintings are from his dreams of flying over the rainforest visiting his beautiful Djabugandji country. After spending 30 mins in UMI Arts we boarded the bus we were on our way to As You Like It Hair Gallery in Stratford.

As You Like It Hair Gallery presented the exhibition Rock Pools by husband and wife team Richard Andrew Blanch and Marcia Ebdell-Blanch. The collection combined sculptural, textural canvas and photographic works. The exhibition showcased the life and wonders of local coastal shores. Crawlers also enjoyed live hair theatre and delicious food and drinks. We then headed back to the Cairns CBD arriving at Cairns Regional Gallery at 7:30pm.

Cairns Regional Gallery is the region’s premier art museum featuring three floors of exhibitions from local and interstate artists housed in a 1930s heritage building. Crawlers enjoyed the exhibitions on display including Featherweight by local artist Daniel Wallwork (Wally). Crawlers could also visit the gallery shop stocked with collections of ceramics, home wares, jewellery, books for children and adults as well as the best of Australian design. Back on the bus we travelled a short distance to Red Chair Gallery bus stop number five.

Red Chair Gallery presents the work of local artists Simon Poole, Di Sant, Lone White Ceramics, Jeni Bullock, Cave Creations Jewellery, Rachel Platte (ceramics and glass wear), ReeMade Art, Zita Sudnika, Janine Easton, Shattered Images Mosaics, Jenny Greatorex, Julie Daniels, Assemblage Animals, Jeanne Mogis, Jammy Slarks and many more. Crawlers were treated to sounds of live guitar, and the sights of live body painting and an array of locally created artworks, crafts and giftware.

At bus stop six crawlers were greeted by Cell Art Space exhibiting artist Sandy Edgar whom handed out envelopes for crawlers, some of which contained the prize of an original artwork. Sandy presented gifts and a short artist talk explaining his exhibition Fusion. Lawsoon Moon Band carved up some tunes as crawlers were invited to enter Cell Art Space to get close and personal with the exhibition. C.1907 Contemporary Artspace next door to Cell Art Space was the Crawls seventh and final stop.

C.1907 Contemporary Artspace is an art space dedicated to support, promote and encourage the presentation of local contemporary work. Crawlers viewed Taste of life by Latvian born Zita. Zita’s master’s degree from one of Europe’s classic art academies serves her well in expressing her creativity with oils on canvas. In Taste of life she portrayed on canvas how one’s emotions and senses are the very essence of life.

This blog post has been contributed by Fleur McMenamin A-Venue Cairns Coordinator, she took us through the highlights of the day.

Sat 9 March 2013 saw the latest Our Band Biz Workshop in Cairns roll out for emerging Indigenous, Pacific and Torres Strait Islander musicians and managers.

Our Band Biz this year featured an inspirational hour-long career talk and short performance by Australian Music industry legends, Vika and Linda Bull. This was followed by a networking lunch and three hours of intensive workshop sessions led by some of Queensland’s leading industry professionals.

The day ended with performances by high profile Far North Indigenous acts Aden and Astro (from Zennith), and Troy and Trevelyn Brady. Three participating local bands also got to take advantage of a professional photo shoot as part of the workshop, and were provided with high quality Band Bio publicity images to help further develop their careers and profiles.

A great time was had by all, excellent feedback was received from participants and the workshop resulted in some great outcomes for the bands and managers involved.

The project was funded by Arts Queensland’s Backing Indigenous Arts Fund and presented as a collaboration between A-Venue | Creative Partnerships | Tanks Arts Centre.

by Melody Woodnutt

I live with the midnight sun, fishermans’ tales, white mountains, blizzards, or the cocoon winters of 21 hours darkness per day.

I live between open calls for future artists and 14 current artists on-site.

I live in Iceland, and hail from Brisbane. I currently curate and develop festivals, programs, and events as Director of Nes Listamiðstöð Artist Residency. I’ve created an opportunity for you here.

I call for artists to join me here. I call for them at the edge of a fjörð and while subject to that of arctic weather and winds. I call for them from lava fields and ice caves, I call for them from geo-thermal springs, and from tops of mountains on this tiny volcanic island wedged somewhere between the Arctic Circle, the USA, and Europe.

I am an artist who has worked to develop immersive or engaged installations in theatres, galleries and the streets; these spatial installations are for action, performance, sensory awareness, mood, or for the body to feel spaces anew. They are microcosms of macrocosms, and encourage us to consider society anew – as a space we inhabit. I have furthered this into the tangible social form of curation of residencies, places and spaces for other artists to act within through structure and opportunity. I like strange spaces, and I like creating them on varying scales and complexity. My recent work at Nes Artist Residency has enabled ephemeral guided social sculpture through the form of curated programs, artist intervention, and community engagement within this small Nordic fishing village. (See the end of this writing for current programs and call for artists).

But to rewind, I understand that the seed of all this was YAMP (now JUMP) which was facilitated by Youth Arts Queensland. I stood up in a room and proclaimed to all that were better than I, that I would be a painter, to follow in others footsteps and paint like an expressionist! Hoorah! I was dead wrong. But it was because of this epic fail (and a program in which to make it), that during the Young Artist Mentorship Program with YAQ I was able to morph and change and actually understand the real context that my work fit into. It was because of YAMP that I was able to learn about the industry, the realities, and the strategies to navigate all this. I had a way in. So, I could develop within the construct of a real industry and that meant funding. YAMP funding, that walked me through my first grant.

Creatively, I was surprising myself during YAMP. I had been painting the body in space; why not put it there in actuality. So after promptly abandoning oil painting I developed a large scale installation to house the body for my YAMP outcome. It had sex written all over it and was made of sound, sculpture, an immersive environment, and it was the beginning of something else. I was then standing up and proclaiming I was an installation artist. Now, I still do, and it is constantly moving into new territory.

Here is a simple (mis)educational flow chart of career progression in my case:

(please insert between every point: solo exhibitions and collaborations/group shows, free arts work, and of course support of amazing people)

No university study to -> 6 years traveling and living all over the world to -> YAMP to –> Metro Arts to -> Residency in Iceland at Nes Artist Residency funded by Arts Queensland and auspiced by YAQ to –> Visible City (keynote project) for Melbourne Fringe funded by everyone to –> more residencies in Iceland to –> collaborations and collectives to -> Metro Arts programs in Brisbane to –> Artistic direction/Director and management of Nes Artist Residency Iceland to –> co-founder of The Weight of Mountains to – …now.

I have been incredibly fortunate, and am entirely still green.

But I am calling out for others to join me. Be it from the Nordic winters with wind and ice abraising my cheeks, or from the Australian suburbs, with bogans and beer abraising my cheeks. I’d like to ask people to come on board and do this together; in new curatorial and custom built spaces for progression, development, creation, and action.

Here are some links to my programs, call outs, or websites:

Summer We Go Public – current ongoing arts event running in Skagaströnd Iceland for 4 months. For artists working in public, live art, street art, engaged or ephemeral arts practice. Late inquiries welcome.

http://summeratnes.wordpress.com/

The Weight of Mountains – current call for filmmakers to attend a 3 month film creative development residency and create a short film on location that will be shown in The Weight of Mountains Film Festival in Iceland. The inaugural film program that will take filmmakers to some of the most remote or challenging environments the world over. To apply: www.twom.is

The Federal Government on Sunday announced its long-awaited plan to overhaul school funding, promising “a plan to properly resource teachers, classrooms and kids for generations to come.” [1]

The reforms, which are based on the core recommendations of the independent Gonski review, propose a school funding increase of $14.5 billion over 6 years.

This will include $12 billion to be directed to public schools, of which 2.5 billion will be allocated to Queensland public schools, as well as a further $2.5 billion nationally to Catholic and independent schools.[2]

The funding relies on States and Territories signing a new National Education Reform Agreement, committing to boost their education spending by 3 per cent per year, maintain current school spending and stop education cuts and funding freezes.

The Prime minister’s press office said in Sunday’s media release that it will create a school resource standard – an amount of money the Government says is required to educate a child.

“The per-student amount for 2014 will be $9,271 for primary school students and $12,193 for secondary school students,” the Press Release said.

“These are based on the average costs of high performing schools.” [2]

Locally, the Federal Government has offered QLD almost $2.5 billion over six years if it commits $1.3 billion of its own money and increases education funding by 3 per cent every year.

The good news for Australian schools has been somewhat overshadowed by the announcement that universities will be hit by a 2 per cent efficiency dividend in order to make room for the funding.

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman on Tuesday told State Parliament that he would approach the Gonski proposal “very cautiously indeed.”[3]

“It is not right to hit the uni students of Queensland,” Mr Newman said.

Universities Australia chair Glyn Davis told ABC Radio National on Sunday that cuts will mainly fall upon student support services, for example, the amount of contact hours, the amount of student counselling, the hours in the library and stock in the laboratories.

“It means, in very approximate terms, what is currently $9400 becomes $9200 to support each student on average,” Ms Davis said.[4]

Prime Minister Gillard will discuss the plans with state Premiers on Friday at the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting in Canberra.
