Alexander Cuffe
Hybrid Art
Brisbane
Mentor: Joel Stern
In his practice Alexander Cuff engages with notions of immersion, sensation, audio-visuality, space and performance. His works deal with notions of sustainability and environment by incorporating found and recycled objects and materials. Alexander is an 'urban gleaner', sifting through discarded and forgotten spaces, gathering materials with potential to be activated and renewed in his art. He considers this practice to be environmentally conscientious and appropriate to the contemporary context of environmental crisis.
Alexander explores the physicality of objects in relation to concepts from science, physics, kinetics and aesthetics. New media technologies are placed in relation to natural phenomena including the 'vibrations' of light and sound. He treats these materials as 'kinetic'; different forms and transferences of energy.
Alexander is becoming increasingly engaged and informed by the traditions of sound art and electronic music. Sound art addresses audiences directly yet is ephemeral and may exist only in the moment of the performance or activation. He has developed several sculptural musical instruments that activate through sonic feedback processes and vibrations and have performed with these instruments at sound art meetings and events. By combining traditional art practices and skills, new media innovations, and sonic sculpture, Alexander has tried to create a modern, innovative, environmentally conscious and highly personal art practice.
