Lighting Design
Brisbane

Mentor: Doug Brimblecomb - The Queensland Performing Arts Centre

Julian Roberts started his circus career at the young age of 14 when he was asked to join the Flipside Youth Circus Performance Troupe. He performed with Flipside for four years and developed particular talent in the areas of juggling, acrobatics and clowning.

In 2006, Julian began a Diploma in Circus Arts at Circo Arts, Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology. While he studied in New Zealand he took the opportunity to travel the country performing with Jerry Hattrick and The 6 Foots. Since completion he has created Hoopla Clique with a group of young performers and has been showcasing around Brisbane, Melbourne and at the Woodford Folk Festival.

His success is due to his passion for the arts and the determination to create comically genius shows and events. Comedy clowning and circus have always gone hand in hand, although the style that Hoopla Clique has grown into have been reviewed by punters and industry professionals as original and a breath of fresh air. Hoopla Clique's recent show, The Blind Date Café was successfully performed, written, organised and directed by Hoopla Clique.

Julian is currently in the process of completing a lighting course through the Entertainment and Technical Events College. Once he becomes qualified, he plans to handle all lighting related tasks himself within Hoopla Clique.

Julian has the goal of developing Hoopla Clique into a completely self-sustainable and self-managed company.
