Good Habits for the Business Savvy Artist
If you are serious about your art-making and about earning an income from it, you need to develop good habits early in your career. Being organised and business-minded about your art practice is a must, but it is often a juggling act. Here are five simple tips towards developing your good business habits.
- Don't mix it up - Keep your personal and artistic funds separate. Establish a bank account and credit card just for your artistic income and expenses.
- Build a system- Keeping good, organised records either in a diary, a computer spreadsheet, a calendar or logbook helps you to know when, where, how, and who so you are better able to present transactions and communications of all your business dealings.
- Risky business- Identify the risks of your business, consider how to cover yourself. Do you have income protection insurance. What if your tools are stolen?
- Skill up- Improve your skills. If you are serious about your art-making and earning an income from it, invest in yourself by improving your 'business skills'.
- Call on the experts - Get the right advice before you start your arts business. Here are a few web sites to research...
