DOPE ZINE
December 2007
A zine (an abbreviation of the word fanzine, and originating from the word magazine) is most commonly a small circulation, non-commercial publication of original or appropriated texts and images. More broadly, the term encompasses any self-published work of minority interest. Since the invention of the printing press (if not before), dissidents and marginalized citizens have published their own opinions in leaflet and pamphlet form.
Zines have been adopted by those particularly attached to the print medium; for artistic expressions not replicable on a computer, functional purposes (a zine is innately more portable than a computer), or for subcultural reasons.
Dope is an exhibition curated by recent QUT visual arts graduate Victoria S. Macdonnell, and brings together 14 zines created by 16 upcoming Brisbane artists at the Transit Lounge.
Admission is free and runs Monday till Wednesday, 12.00 - 4.30pm until the 13th of December. There will be a closing night event on Thursday the 13th of December from 6pm till 8pm at the Transit Lounge Valley, which will include informal talks by local zine aficionados and the musical stylings of local acts Shiver Like Timber and Genevieve Graves, as well as Fuyu and glam shock-rockers Painkillers and the RSK, all of whom have work in the show.
Dope includes the work of:
- Betony Dirks (Shiver Like Timber)
- Ngaio Parr
- Megan Bauer & Laura Devereux (Your Blind Lady Robot)
- Domonique Elliott & Jesse Hawkins
- Jesse Olsen
- Alexandra Macdonnell
- Victoria Macdonnell (Painkillers and the RSK)
