YAMP

YAMP in 2010

YAMP 2010 focuses on young and emerging artsworkers from across Queensland. The seven successful participants will be using their mentorships to develop skills in curation, arts and event management, music and theatrical production and more.

YAQ recently announced the successful applicants for this year’s YAMP program. YAMP 2010 focuses on young and emerging artsworkers from across Queensland. This year’s seven talented participants come from the wider Brisbane area, Bundaberg and Cairns, and are aiming to build careers as curators, arts and event managers, music and theatrical producers, technical coordinators and lighting designers. Over the next eight months, they will work with their mentors to develop artistic projects, undertake arts business training and firmly establish themselves in their artistic practices.

The 2010 YAMP participants are:

  • Dan Lewis (Brisbane), mentored by Lawrence English – arts business management
  • Daniele Constance (Brisbane), mentored by Sarah Woodland – developing arts therapies for at risk young people
  • Genevieve Trace (Brisbane), mentored by Liz Burcham – production

About YAMP

Our ever so popular YAMP program has undergone a few changes. In 2010, YAMP stands for Young Artsworkers Mentoring Program and is open to young and emerging producers, curators, arts administrators and marketers, events and technical coordinators, lighting and sound designers and other cultural workers of up to 30 years of age. Seven places are available this year - five for artsworkers who propose their own mentors and twho in technical coordination and lighting - and we invite applications from artsworkers from across Queensland.

What YAMP can do for you

Participating in YAMP will give you a unique opportunity to partner with a professional in your field. Your mentor is your choice. You will work closely with them bouncing off ideas and reflecting and critically assessing your work. You will gain industry knowledge and arts business skills, build your own networks and enhance your employment potential. YAMP also provides funding of up to $4,000 towards your professional development and brokers opportunities for you to work within the industry, learn from peers and showcase your work.

How YAMP works

Similar to previous years, YAMP will run for a 9-month period providing a flexible structure to a formal mentoring relationship between you and your chosen mentor.

If you are successful in applying to YAMP, you will commence the program with induction which takes place in Brisbane on the 16th and 17th of April. Induction is a great opportunity to meet other artists and artsworkers, mentors and YAQ staff and learn more about how to make your mentoring relationship work.

You will then set off and develop and work on your own project. Your relationship with your mentor will start to take shape. You will have to catch up or check in with them regularly to get the support and feedback you need to take your career forward.

You will participate in YAQ's Navigation Arts Business Training program before you complete the program in December 2010.

Mentorships in technical coordination and lighting

Thanks to our long-standing partners Brisbane Festival and QPAC, YAQ was able to offer two very special YAMP mentorships in 2010.

Brisbane Festival is offering a unique mentoring opportunity in technical coordination. For a period of eight weeks, the successful applicant will work alongside Jono Perry, Technical Director for Brisbane Festival, and develop hands-on skills in the technical production of outdoor events.

The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) is supporting YAMP this year by providing a mentorship in lighting. This is a great opportunity for a young person interested in developing skills, networks and experience in the area of lighting and lighting design within the performing arts industry. If you are successful, you'll be working within the Lighting team in the Production Services Unit at QPAC for an 8-week period of employment and be mentored by their Manager – Lighting, Doug Brimblecombe.
