What is YAMP?
The Young Artists Mentoring Program (YAMP) is about putting together a creative young person, doing the arts practice they love doing the best, with a more experienced person who works in that job or knows a lot about it - the young artist or arts worker is helped along by the more experienced one. They usually live in the same region of Queensland, and try to meet, or communicate about their creative work in some way, every couple of weeks. Mentoring is a partnership where both the mentor and mentoree can benefit from sharing knowledge, industry networks, ideas and experience.
YAMP is a 9 month program. Many of the mentoring relationships developed through YAMP will continue on an informal basis beyond YAMP and may last for years. The mentor and mentoree must be committed to the relationship so that they can share experiences and learn from each other.
How Does It Work?
You and your chosen mentor apply for a place in YAMP together with a joint application. If you can't find someone to be your mentor, we can help you by advising you on whom to approach, or maybe by approaching someone for you. Aim for your absolute dream mentor when choosing. YAMP could really launch your career in the arts, so it is important to be mentored by someone who is relevant to where you want your career to go and who you are going to get along with - you will have many adventures together over the 9 months. Selection of successful YAMP applications will be made by the YAMP Advisory Committee.
How do I get involved?
The next round of YAMP applications is now open and will close on the 14th of November this year.
YAMP 2008 is funded by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations' Skilling Queenslanders for Work Initiative. Youth Arts Queensland proudly manages YAMP.
